IYOR MALAYSIA 2008 OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED

KUALA LUMPUR
, 25 Feb: International Year of Reef Malaysia Chapter was officially launched by Ministry Natural Resources and Environment Secretary General, Datuk Suboh Mohd Yassin, last Saturday.

Together with actress Maya Karin, they also officially opened CoRal Malaysia’s underwater photography competition, Terengganu Go Green – Seashutterbug 2008.

With this soft opening, all divers and non-divers who interested to participate in this event can start sending their photos to CoRal Malaysia secretariat.

IYOR Malaysia launching which was held from 20th – 24th February, started slowly but hit its peak on Saturday, when supporters from all walk of lives came for the launched.

CoRal Malaysia’s activity ‘painting with kids’ continued its success story, as it really make the exhibition alive. Supported by our volunteers – Nooraini, Sham, Suhaimi, Kartini, Soupi and Su – we managed to get more than 200 kids involved in the program.

All hard work was really paid off when the children really showed interest in marine life and we send happy faces back to their parent with gifts sponsored by Umno and Marine Park Department.

And more contribution from CoRal Malaysia - a 10 feet canvas sketched by professional painter, Ronnie Mohamad (you can find him in Central Market), was a hit with visitor.

IYOR Malaysia 2008’s aims include strengthening awareness about the ecological, economic, social and cultural value of coral reef and its associated ecosystem. It also hopes to improve understanding of the critical threats faced by reefs and generating solutions to reduce them.

Exhibition based on IYOR Malaysia’s slogan OUR Reef, OUR Heritage, OUR Responsibility, will not stop here – it will continue throughout the year to promote awareness and the importance of coral reef conservation.

For CoRal Malaysia, together with Marine Park Department, we hope to bring this exhibition to Tioman Island – as our next destination.

So, hope to see you in Tioman for our celebration of Earth Day.
